Subject: Project Assessment Memo

We completed our public service announcement on the topic “Campus Rape”. Recently Hampton University partnered with Everfi, an online sexual prevention program, to increase rape awareness. This program introduces students to common crimes on college campuses such as sexual assault. This program provides students with sexual assault scenarios and informs students on how they can protect themselves. We selected this topic because campus rape is a common crime on college campuses. Also, rapes involving college students have increased tremendously. Knowing that sexual assault is happening in our communities, in places where we are every day, we can look for opportunities to notice and take action when things are not right. We want to build safe, supportive communities. Also, we hope to educate students who are unaware of campus rapes.

We had trouble deciding what information to put in the public service announcement so that it would be easily understood by the audience. We also had trouble deciding what images to put in the public service announcement so that it would be appealing to the audience. The discourse conventions and audience played a major role in the public service announcement because we had to make it understandable and appealing for the audience.

The most challenging part of the public service announcement was creating an informative poster that would appeal to the eye of the audience. Before starting the public service announcement, we had to determine what rhetorical strategies, colors, and images to use in our public service announcement to help us convey our message. This required time because we had to brainstorm and put our ideas together. After brainstorming, we decided to incorporate sexual assault statistics, personal experiences, and eye catching colors in our public service announcement. We incorporated colors such as purple, pink, yellow, green, red, and blue. We utilized one color for the word “campus” and we utilized multiple colors for the word “rape” to draw viewers’ attention to the issue at hand, rape. Next, we had to make a rough draft of our poster and get our teachers feedback. After receiving the teacher’s feedback, we decided to condense our information because we did not want to overwhelm the audience with too much information. After condensing the information, we had to determine which person was going to draw the images and which person was going to write. We selected Nicolle Williams to draw because she is the best drawer and we selected Ta’Tyana Stevens to write because she has legible handwriting. Nicole struggled with drawing the pictures. Ta’Tyana struggled with writing in a straight line and big enough so the viewers could see. They constantly were erasing and starting over to ensure the poster was neat.

The most effective aspect of our public service announcement, we believe, were the images. For example, in our poster we included a girl, with dries tears on her face, with a sign over her mouth that says “I said no” alongside with statistics. This image speaks volumes! This images represents how women are taken advantage of sexually. This image also represents how women can become a statistic. This picture is displayed under the statement “It happened to one of my friends”. During our presentation, Ta’Tyana will speak more on the picture and one of her close friends, who is a victim of rape.
